Make the most of your space - top tips for transforming a small bathroom

A common remark we hear from our clients is that their bathroom is “small” or even “tiny”. When in reality, it’s usually the same size as most of the bathrooms that we transform. It’s easy to get used to seeing your bathroom in it’s current layout that it becomes difficult to imagine it any other way. However, depending on your style, small rooms have the potential to be bright and airy or dark and dramatic – just think about hotels you may have visited that have very small bathrooms but can offer a functional space but also a place to relax and unwind.

We love the challenge of designing a smaller bathroom even when it is perhaps a tricky shape. We think intelligently about the layout and products so that we can achieve the maximum potential out of the space while keeping to your chosen style.

Read on for our tips on what to think about when transforming your space including some neat ways to trick your eyes into seeing a room that looks bigger than it really is whilst still offering practical solutions.

Keep your bathroom clutter free!

The right furniture is key to making a bathroom work at it’s most efficient and creating storage solutions in more compact spaces.

An uncluttered bathroom will help your mind and body to relax at the end of the day. We can help you decide how much storage you really need and which to choose.

Maximising your floor space is key to making the footprint of the room feel larger. Lifting the furniture and toilet off the floor with wall hung designs will give the impression of extra space and a sleeker, more stylish bathroom that is easy to clean and ideal for a busy family.

Meanwhile, floor-standing bathroom pieces are a handy space-saving solution too as they’ll have cupboards or drawers maximising storage by going right down to the floor and have the benefit of hiding any unsightly pipework if needed.

Shadow Gap Lighting

So, your WC and basin unit are now wall hung. A great visual trick is to add clever lighting. Using LED strips or mini spotlights to illuminate those floor areas that are left in shadow will connect the space back to the room. It also offers a secondary lighting option which is softer, less direct and enhances a relaxing mood effect for long soaks in the bath or relaxing rainfall showers.

Big tiles, less grout lines!

If you are finding it difficult to be inspired and see how you can open up your space or you are restricted by architectural features such as sloping roofs or you’ve simply not got much floor space to work with, tiles can help!

A great trick to make a small bathroom look bigger is to reduce the number of distinct visual spaces in favour of a flowing continuous design. One way to do this is to use the same tiles on the floor as on the walls. This works even better if you go for a larger sized tile which instantly makes you feel as though you have more room. You can also continue the feeling of never-ending space by using the same tile on the floor of your shower as the rest of the bathroom with our collection of wet room floor tiles.

Wall and floor tiles in lighter shades will immediately open up your bathroom. Consider pale neutral and white colours or cool pastel hues such as blues and greens which will add a serene feeling to the room. Keep furniture light too and make the most of any natural light available. You can always bring an on-trend pop of colour to your room with accessories.

To create a clever illusion that adds extra depth your walls, consider using tiles with a three-dimensional pattern with use of highlights and shadows. We have a number of beautiful ranges that include a decorative tile in the same shade as other wall tiles to allow you to have the same flowing look but with an extra visual feature which complements and improves the sense of space.

The seamless look with tiles is becoming ever more sought after. Tiles are definitely getting bigger. This allows fewer grout lines giving a joint-less appearance with the added benefit of being easier to maintain leaving soap and limescale with less to take hold of.

Recesses

Whether they are in a shower wall or above a bath, recesses help the eye to see beyond the wall face by giving it extra depth. They also offer a practical shelf for storing your essential items when you need them. Dressing this space with stylish candles will also transform your mood when opting for long soaks in the bath. Placing a light into these recesses is also a great way to accentuate depth and create softer feature lighting or low-level lighting for night time visits to the WC.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall

Add a fabulous large mirror to give the illusion of space at eye level. Mirrored cabinets combine two must-haves in one – plenty of space for regularly used toiletries or other smaller items as well as a mirror for shaving or applying make-up.

Whatever your style, budget or room size with a bit of planning we can adapt and apply a great design scheme to fit your space.
